Birds in my garden
I've fed birds for quite a while now, buying fatballs alongside sunflower kernels and mixed seed. On a whim, I decided to make my own fatballs. Turns out that they appear cheaper and better than the shop bought ones. Here's how I did it. I mixed 500g each of rolled oats, raisins, peanuts (whizzed in a food processor), sunflower kernels with 1Kg of melted lard (all supermarket cheapest own brand). As it cools, it starts setting I put some into moulds like plastic drainpipe, and formed other bits in a length of old plastic gutter.
The birds seem to love it - although the starlings are the worst - they all seem to get a look in. When I caught sight of a goldfinch, I went out and bought nyjer seed, which as you can see, they love. So far I have caught sight of: Great, blue and long tailed tits, Chaffinch, greenfinch, goldfinch, sparrow, starling, blackbird & robin (of course) and woodpecker. All rather good fun.

Starlings are like that over here too, Ham. I just grin and try to bear it. I have some splendid photos of starlings as teenagers and they are really a nice looking bird and wait patiently on mother or father to bring them something to eat. I just let them eat and in time I notice they like one thing more than another and then I put one of those out for them and concentrate on something else the other birds like and it works out.
I like these birds but have no idea what they are as we have nothing like them to compare over here.
